Those Who Want Peace, Make Peace - Nonviolence as a Contribution of Civil Society to Peace

Violence, wars and rearmament dominate foreign policy. What are the perspectives of non-violent strategies before, during and after violent conflicts? How do peace researchers and activists classify the potential of violence-avoiding possibilities of conflict management?

 

Bremen Peace Award 2013

Every two years the schwelle Foundation selects nominees for the Bremen Peace Award. The winners of the Award 2013 are the Argentinian human rights activist Natalia Sarapura, the initiative against slavery in Pakistan "Insan Dost Association" and the anti-nuclear activists from Gorleben Anna and Andreas von Bernstorff.

Peace Award Winner: Natalia Sarapura, Argentina

Natalia Sarapura is described as friendly, consistent and effective in the public eye. She is an indigenous Argentinian and developer of a unique development programme in which land acquisition, education and improvement of living conditions play a central role. For her convincing work she was the winner of the Bremen Peace Award 2013 in the category "The Unknown Peaceworker".

Bremen Peace Award 2013: Insan Dost Association, Pakistan

Slave work is forbidden in Pakistan, and yet still commonplace. Insan Dost Association campaigns for its abolition. It has founded trade unions and schools, represents female workers in court, helping them to increase their self-confidence in the fight against slavery. For its convincing work they were awarded with the Bremen Prize 2013.

Bremen Peace Award 2013: Anna and Andreas von Bernstorff, Germany

The Earl and Countess of Bernstorff are fighting with different means against the planned nuclear waste disposal site in Gorleben, Germany. The couple practices civil disobedience, takes legal action against the wrongful use of the salt deposit and, in its own forestry work, implements sustainable alternatives to nuclear power. For its convincing work they were the winner of the Bremen Peace Award 2013 in the category "Public Engagement".
