Centre for Legal Aid: Protection for refugees – legal aid and advocacy in Bulgaria

The Centre for Legal Aid – Voice in Bulgaria (CLA) is more than just a legal aid organisation. Since its foundation in 2009, the CLA has stood by people who have lost everything and are seeking protection in Bulgaria. In an environment where refugees often face rejection, mistrust and institutional barriers, the CLA works tirelessly to defend their rights, dignity and access to justice.

For many refugees, Bulgaria is the gateway to Europe – but instead of protection, they often encounter new dangers: illegal pushbacks at the borders, arbitrary detention in inhumane conditions and massive obstacles to accessing fair asylum procedures. Particularly vulnerable groups such as unaccompanied minors, survivors of sexualised or gender-based violence and stateless persons are often left defenceless against these dangers.

This is where the CLA comes in – as one of the few organisations in the country offering these people free, specialised and dedicated legal advice and representation. The CLA team supports refugees and migrants in administrative proceedings, court cases and before international bodies such as the European Court of Human Rights. Through strategic litigation, the CLA fights not only for the rights of individuals, but also for structural improvements to the entire asylum and migration system in Bulgaria.

CLA's work goes far beyond the courtroom: The organisation raises public awareness of the often invisible fates of refugees, fights for transparency and accountability in government action, and works closely with national authorities, EU institutions and civil society networks. The goal: a fair and humane asylum system that does not close the door to the most vulnerable members of our societies, but gives them a fair chance.

At a time when European and national migration policies are increasingly focused on isolation, speeding up deportations and restricting legal protection, the work of the CLA is more important than ever. With courage, expertise and empathy, the organisation is committed to ensuring that the fundamental values of human rights also apply in Bulgaria: protection, dignity and justice for all – regardless of origin, status or nationality.
