Proposal 2: Nonviolent Conflict Transformation - Act for Transformation

Peace Award 2024: Shortlist Award of the Donors

The cooperative trains trainers in non-violent communication and conflict transformation. It works in an international network towards the goal of containing violent conflicts and dealing with them in a non-violent way. Act for Transformation does educational and networking work and supports conscientious objectors – currently especially from Ukraine and Russia.

With a democratic and transparent structure in which every member has equal voting rights, the initiative wants to live democracy practically.

Since 2007, the non-profit cooperative has been active in global and intercultural learning and civil conflict transformation. The members work as globally networked trainers who are committed to civil conflict transformation. They are closely associated with the «Alternatives to Violent» project. Many of the interactive methods come from the rich experience of the international network.

The course concept «fair-together», developed from this, offers trainings for young people and refugees and supports cross-border youth encounters. Trainers from different countries take part in training courses designed especially for them. Thus, trainers from Germany, South Sudan, Sudan, Georgia, Ukraine, Russia and other countries form mixed teams when trainings in non-violent conflict resolution, peace building, intercultural learning or trauma healing are offered.

Since 2021, Act for Transformation has been providing Global Peace Rooms in cooperation with other actors, as places for peace education, intercultural and global learning. Live or virtually, people from different countries, regions, social and cultural backgrounds meet to get to know each other, exchange ideas and share their perspectives. In this way, mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence can be developed. Children, young people, youth leaders and teachers can inform themselves about and exchange views on topics related to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and thus develop perspectives for action. So far, «Peace Rooms» exist in Germany, the South Caucasus region and in Tbilisi.

For people in the South Caucasus who are avoiding the Ukraine war, Act for Transformation offers advice and support. They provide information about European rights to conscientious objection, possibilities for asylum in various European countries and support options. Conscientious objectors are also supported in finding accommodation and orientation in their new country. Act for Transformation is supported by an international network of cooperating peace organisations.
